National Police Week runs from May 10-16, 2026 and honors law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
SEPTA Transit Police Sergeant Thomas Sewell was stabbed to death on March 12, 1989 while investigating a prowler who was trespassing in a garage at the 69th St Terminal Complex in Upper Darby Township.
Sergeant Sewell had responded to the call at approximately 4:30AM and was searching the suspect when the man suddenly turned around and started stabbing him in the head with a 12-inch kitchen knife. Sergeant Sewell was able to shoot the suspect twice during the attack—killing him.
Sergeant Sewell had served with the SEPTA Transit Police Department for seven years. He was 31.
SEPTA’s Transit Police Department has been dedicated to keeping customers safe and secure since 1981.
The SEPTA Transit Police Force was first deployed on May 10, 1981. The inaugural class consisted of 55 officers and now the department has grown to over 200 officers patrolling a 2,200 square-mile area.
We proudly recognize and thank the officers who dedicate their careers to protect riders, employees, and communities. Their role extends far beyond enforcement. They provide reassurance, stability, and care for the people who depend on public transportation every day. It’s their commitment that makes our system safe.
SEPTA Transit Police recently reported a 30% reduction in serious crimes for the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year including a 42% decrease on the L. This progress is the result of a comprehensive approach that combines increased staffing, targeted enforcement, investments in modern technology, and improvements to station and vehicle infrastructure.
SEPTA continues to build on its efforts to enhance safety and security on the system which includes recruiting and retaining Transit Police Officers with six experienced officers joining the force this month and another 16 cadets expected to graduate police academy in June. Serious crime remains at its lowest level since at least 2015 supported by the largest uniformed Transit Police force in more than a decade.
We extend our best wishes to these new recruits and express gratitude for their bravery and protection. And we thank every SEPTA Transit Police Officer for their service, vigilance, and unwavering dedication.
