Guide to Free Transfers on SEPTA Bus & Metro:
Riders can transfer between SEPTA Bus and Metro services at stations, stops, and transit centers throughout the region. However, not all transfers are included in the cost of your fare. Here’s how you get the most from your fare by taking advantage of free transfers:
2-Hour Free Transfer Window
Riders using a SEPTA Key card or Contactless payment with their credit or debit card can make up to two transfers for free, while KeyTix users can make one transfer for free. These transfers must be made within 2 hours of their first tap, and do not apply to round trips. You must use the same card for all segments of your trip to receive free transfers.
Please note that riders paying with cash or Quick Trip cannot take advantage of the 2-hour free transfer window.
Free Interchanges
All riders transferring between SEPTA Metro services can take advantage of free interchanges at the following stations:
- 15th St/City Hall (between the , , and )
- 13th St (between the and )
- Drexel Station at 30th St (between the and )
A free interchange means that riders don’t have to go through a faregate while making their transfer. Instead, they can simply walk from one platform to the other. This benefit is available to all riders, regardless of how they paid their fare.
More Information about Free Transfers:
- Free transfers are available only between SEPTA Bus & Metro services. They are not available for trips involving Regional Rail. Similarly, any transfer to Regional Rail or from Regional Rail will require an additional fare.
- The 2-hour free transfer window is not applicable for round-trips. This applies to return trips on the same route or a parallel route. For example, a return trip made within two hours of the original trip will require an additional $2.00 fare.

Regional Rail Pay-Per-Ride Fares
$4.25 – $9.25 | Quick Trip Ticket – Center City Fare Kiosks
Fare Pricing Explained
Fares for Regional Rail vary based on trip details including the zone of your start and end stations, the day of the week, time of day, and payment method. Customers using Key cards on Regional Rail must tap on at their starting station and tap out at their end station to ensure correct fare calculation. Failure to tap out will result in the highest fare deducted from the Travel Wallet balance.
Fare Zones
Each Regional Rail station belongs to a fare zone as shown in the map below. Zones are used to determine distance when calculating fares.
- Zone 1/Center City: Stations in or near Center City
- Zone 2: Philadelphia and nearest suburbs
- Zone 3: Outlying areas of Philadelphia and nearby suburbs
- Zone 4: Distant suburbs, Philadelphia International Airport, and Delaware
- NJ: New Jersey
