Due to increasing demand, SEPTA has expanded its underground bicycle parking at the Broad Street Line Tasker-Morris Station from six U-racks to 16. The parking at Tasker-Morris, which opened in August 2016, is SEPTA’s first underground bicycle infrastructure.
“Cycling is extremely popular in Philadelphia and we saw, even during the cold weather, the racks at Tasker-Morris were filled to capacity,” said SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey Knueppel. “The need to have a designated place where our customers can leave their bicycles is apparent throughout the SEPTA system.”
Tasker-Morris Station also features bicycle stair runners to assist customers going up and down the steps with a bicycle, security cameras and educational signage about SEPTA’s bicycle parking policy and information regarding how to securely lock a bike to the U-rack. Markers at the top of the station stairs indicate bicycle parking is available inside the station.
SEPTA has plans to create similar underground bicycle parking locations at 2nd Street Station on the Market-Frankford Line and at Snyder and Ellsworth-Federal Stations on the Broad Street Line.
Additional street-level bicycle racks will be installed at Berks, 30th and 46th Street Stations on the Market-Frankford Line and at Cecil B. Moore and Oregon Stations on the Broad Street Line later this year.
Bicycle ridership in Philadelphia is among the highest in the country. The expansion of bike parking is part of the authority’s Cycle Transit Plan to increase and enhance bicycle infrastructure at SEPTA stations.
“Stations and stops that are out of walking range from a customer’s starting point or destination are an impediment to someone using transit,” said Knueppel. “By improving the bicycle parking at our stations, we can eliminate this ‘last mile gap’ and make our system convenient for more residents.”
