System-wide ridership in August 2024 was 76% of pre-COVID June 2019 ridership. This is the highest recovery rate since the start of the pandemic!
Average daily ridership was 672,655 unlinked passenger trips across all modes.
System-wide ridership increased 19% from August 2023. On average there were approximately 102,229 more trips per day in August 2024 compared to August 2023.
Bus & trackless trolley ridership increased 9% from August 2023 (316,161) to August 2024 (345,602).
Twenty-four (24) bus routes have a ridership recovery rate that is equal to or greater than 90%!
The five routes with the highest recovery rates are Route 49 (124%), Route 70 (102%), Route 40 (101%), Route 150 (100%), and Route 21 (100%).
Saturday recovery is strongest. Ridership recovery is strongest during midday (9AM – 3PM) and evening hours (6PM -10PM). During the 1PM, 1PM, 3PM, 7PM, and 8PM hours – ridership recovery exceeds 80%. Ridership recovery is weaker during the late night and overnight hours.
Subway/elevated ridership increased 45% relative to August 2023. It is at 77% of pre pandemic levels. August 2024 experienced both the highest total ridership (205,179) and recovery rate (77%) since the start of the pandemic.
Ridership recovery for trolley is at 59% as of August 2024 when compared to the pre-COVID August 2019 total. October 2023 ridership is still the highest both in terms of the total number of unlinked passenger trips and recovery rate. Trolley ridership increased 1% relative to August 2023. Total ridership has remained approximately the same during the month of August for three consecutive years. Trolley ridership recovery is the strongest during the overnight and early morning hours.
Regional Rail ridership recovery is at 65% as of August 2024 when compared to the pre-COVID August 2019 total. Ridership has also increased 23% relative to August 2023 – an increase of 13,943 unlinked trips per day! The average ridership on Mondays and Fridays was approximately 77% of the average daily ridership on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
