Officer Richard Donaldson has proudly served with the SEPTA Transit Police Department since October 2010. Over the course of his 15-year career he has contributed to several specialized units, including patrol, homeland security, the K9 unit, and the SWAT team. He has also served on multiple departmental committees and as a board member of the union.
Currently assigned to the K9 unit Officer Donaldson has been a handler for over eight years. He has worked alongside two K9 partners during that time—his first partner K9 Quest and his current partner K9 Blast. In addition to his handling duties he is a certified K9 trainer for the department. According to him one of the best parts of the job is being able to say “I get paid to play with my K9 partner.”
Officer Donaldson was born and raised in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia—a place that has shaped much of who he is today. Growing up there he experienced both challenges and joys which fueled his deep love for the city especially passionate the sports, culture, and diverse delicious food. Friends and colleagues know he could never pick just one favorite dish.
When he’s off duty Officer Donaldson cherishes his time at home with his twin daughters. Being with them is his way of stepping back from the intensity of police work and appreciating the simple, joyful moments of life.
He extends his best wishes for safety to all and expresses gratitude for the continued support.

Since 1981 the Transit Police Department has focused on ensuring the safety of customers and protecting SEPTA property and staff. The department covers the entire regional SEPTA system across five Pennsylvania counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia) and three states (Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania), with nearly 250 sworn officers serving. Divided into three patrol districts officers respond quickly to emergencies and address local concerns. Additionally specially trained units offer specialized support for policing the transit system.
