Amtrak is undertaking a multi-year project to perform significant power system upgrades to the Harrisburg Line, used by both Amtrak and SEPTA trains.
Amtrak crews will construct new transmission lines and replace old structures. This includes demolishing the existing Bryn Mawr substation and building a new one with added functionality as a traction power substation.
The main purpose of this project is to fill a gap in the power supply system that impacts trains using the Harrisburg Line. Correcting this benefits Amtrak and SEPTA riders by allowing for more reliable, faster trips on these trains. Furthermore, it will eliminate the frequent repairs needed by the outdated infrastructure, which prevents future disruptions in service.
Project Location and Hours
The work takes place along 18 miles of the Harrisburg Line between the Zoo substation in Philadelphia and Paoli substation in Chester County.
Work began in October 2024 and is anticipated to be completed by winter 2027.
Construction hours for the project are 7 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Work outside of these hours will only occur if Amtrak deems it necessary.
Impact on Riders
The impact of this project on SEPTA riders is minimal; there may be an increase in noise levels typical with construction. The Paoli/Thorndale Line that utilizes Bryn Mawr Station continues to operate as normal.
Impact on Area Traffic
No detours or street closures are expected to result during this project. There will, however, be increased traffic from trucks on the street when construction is occurring.
Note that there is changes to parking at Bryn Mawr Station. During construction,
19 parking spaces are temporarily unavailable, and after the new substation is complete, 12 parking spaces will be permanently removed. If you regularly park at Bryn Mawr Station, please plan accordingly.
