Woodland Ave Track Renewal Project to Affect Local Traffic, T4 Trolley, Apr. 11-19

Crews will excavate and replace trackwork and switches on Woodland Ave. The new components and paving should result in fewer vibrations and a smoother ride for trolleys and vehicular traffic.

Project Location and Hours

The work will take place at the intersection of Woodland and Island avenues from April 11 through April 19, 2023.

Normal construction hours are 7 am to 3 pm on Monday-Friday and 6 am to 6 pm on weekends.

Impact on Riders

Shuttle bus service will replace trolley service on the T4 Line from the 40th Street Portal to the Darby Loop.

The buses will be detoured to avoid the construction area before resuming the regular T4 Route. Check for posted signs. Check SEPTA’s Alerts and Detours page for travel information or call Customer Service at 215-580-7800.

Impact on Area Traffic

Pedestrian access to businesses will be arranged to be open during construction.

Vehicular parking will not be permitted in the construction zone or adjacent to the tracks being reconstructed. Signs will be posted in advance. Exceptions may be made as required for those with special needs. Delivery vehicles will have limited access; drivers may have to park and carry parcels to a specific location.

Preliminary work ahead of the start date could result in some loss of parking.

Once work begins:

  • Island Avenue approaching Woodland Avenue will be reduced to one lane in both directions, utilizing the southbound lane. Motorists in the area will be detoured.
  • Local traffic will be permitted up to the construction zone on Woodland Avenue, east of Island Avenue.
  • Emergency vehicles will have uninterrupted access.
  • Trash collection and other city utilities will continue to have access during the closures but should be prepared to coordinate with SEPTA personnel on-site for safe navigation.
  • Posted traffic detours will be erected and maintained around the work area in progress. They will remain in effect even outside of construction hours.

Project Details

  • The work involves replacing the special trackwork and track switches on the eastern part of Woodland Avenue at its intersection with Island Avenue.
  • The track replacement will be performed per updated track construction guidelines.
  • With these projects, it is not uncommon to encounter water leaks from laterals connecting to the water main. These will be addressed accordingly as needed.
