SEPTA officials are being dispatched throughout the transit system this week to talk to customers about ways to ensure they stay safe, as part of National Escalator and Elevator Safety Awareness Week.

The goal is to make travel safer by reminding customers to take some simple steps to stay out of harm’s way.

For example, when using escalators and moving walkways, step on and off carefully, and make sure to just bring yourself – no strollers or carts. Also, always use handrails and keep a close eye on younger children. While escalators and moving walkways, ride face forward and don’t touch sides below handrails. On elevators, don’t force doors open or closed; if doors don’t open, ring the alarm bell and wait for assistance. Also, be sure to avoid elevators in case of fire – use stairs if necessary.

SEPTA System Safety personnel are traveling to a number of stations this week to discuss escalator and elevator safety with customers. Here’s the schedule:

• Tuesday, November 12: Olney Transportation Center (Broad Street and Olney Avenue), 7-9 am and Snyder Station (Broad Street and Snyder Avenue), 3-5 pm
• Wednesday, November 13: Market East Station (12th and Market Streets), 3-5 pm
• Thursday, November 14: Cecil B. Moore Station (Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue), 7-9 am and 56th Street Station (56th and Market Streets), 3-5 pm
• Friday, November 15: Frankford Transportation Center (Bridge Street and Frankford Avenue), 7-9 am and 52nd Street Station (52nd and Market Streets), 1-3 pm

At these events, customers can watch escalator and elevator safety videos, and take home materials such as flyers with safety tips. There will also be coloring books for children featuring the “Safe-T Rider” cartoon character. More interactive Safe-T Rider programs and activities are available at http://safetrider.org.
