Chestnut Hill East Station Closed on May 2 and 3 for Reconstruction Project

Crews have been working to renovate Chestnut Hill East Station since January 2025. The construction is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in summer/fall of 2026. The project will provide better infrastructure, parking lots and accessibility for the station, creating a more comfortable and safer experience for riders.

The project involves the construction of an ADA accessible platform, new railroad track, ADA compliant restrooms, a new fire alarm system, updated lighting, building repairs and new roofing. Crews are also performing curb and sidewalk replacement alongside Chestnut Hill East Station.

Impact on Riders

From Monday, April 20, 2026, through Friday, May 8, weekdays from 7 am to 3 pm, the bus stop at Bethlehem Pike and Newton Street will be closed; passengers are directed to board at Bethlehem Pike and Lynnebrook Lane.

Bus service will operate as normal unless road conditions make it unsafe to continue the regular route. Check SEPTA’s Alerts and Detours page for travel information or call Customer Service at 215-580-7800.

Parking availability is also reduced to 10 spaces in the north lot on Newton Street, including one ADA-accessible space, until further notice.

In addition, on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, Chestnut East Hill Station will be closed. Trains that normally start or end there will instead utilize Gravers Station. Parking will also be unavailable at Chestnut Hill East Station during this time; passengers may instead park at Wyndmoor Station. All SEPTA lots and garages charge for daily-use parking—this includes nights and weekends.

View the schedule PDF for information on how Regional Rail service will be impacted by the closure.

Impact on Area Traffic

From Monday, April 20, 2026, through Friday, May 8, weekdays from 7 am to 3 pm, Bethlehem Pike between Newton Street and East Chestnut Hill Avenue will be reduced to a single travel lane. Specifically, the eastbound lane of Bethlehem Pike will be closed.

Motorists should be prepared to relocate any vehicles parked on Bethlehem Pike. A no parking restriction will be in effect in the construction area during work hours.

In addition, the curb and sidewalk alongside Chestnut Hill East Station will be closed around the clock from East Chestnut Hill Avenue to the south side of the temporary platform entrance.

Project Location and Hours

Work is taking place at Chestnut Hill East Station, located at 100 E. Chestnut Hill Avenue in Philadelphia.

From Sunday, April 5 through Thursday, April 23, 10 pm to 6 am each night, SEPTA’s Power Department will be on site to relocate catenary wires from the existing structures to the new ones. Residents of this neighborhood can expect some level of construction noise and flood lighting required to complete this work.

Normal construction hours are 7 am to 7 pm Mondays-Fridays. Occasional work outside of these hours may also be needed to maintain the project’s timeline.

Project Details

  • A stormwater management system has been installed in the south parking lot. This system will hold more than 80,000 gallons of stormwater under the parking lot to help alleviate runoff and flooding.
  • Foundations have been installed for the new ADA-accessible, high-level platform. The existing steel canopy structure is being restored for use in this new platform.
  • Workers will be finishing improvements in the south parking lot, replacing catenary structures and installing the new platform.
