Background

Erie Avenue is a critical bus corridor providing connections across historically disadvantaged communities in North Philadelphia, linking neighborhoods to SEPTA Metro’s Broad Street Line [B] and Market-Frankford Line [L] and seven bus routes via the high-frequency Route 56 bus. In the neighborhoods around Erie Avenue, one third of households do not have a car and a quarter of workers take SEPTA to work each day. Despite the importance of transit in this area, fewer than 70% of Route 56 trips arrive on time and buses travel just 7 miles per hour on weekdays. The Erie Avenue Transit First Study will identify improvements to ensure transit is quick, reliable, accessible, frequent and safe along the corridor.

Erie Avenue is also on Philadelphia’s High Injury Network—the 12% of streets responsible for 78% of traffic deaths and serious injuries. From 2019 to 2023, ten people were killed and twelve people were seriously injured while traveling the corridor. Improvements identified by the Erie Avenue Transit First Study will reduce dangerous driving behavior with the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities on the corridor.
