Parking Violations and Etiquette

Parking violations represent a significant challenge for urban transportation systems, and SEPTA is no exception. Illegally parked vehicles can obstruct bus routes and delay their service while creating unsafe conditions for riders, motorists and pedestrians. These violations cost our system valuable time and resources, impacting not only operational efficiency but also the rider experience.

SEPTA enforces parking rules by issuing citations to drivers who commit violations.

Identifying and Paying Citations

Just as with a parking violation administered by the city, a vehicle that has been parked in violation of SEPTA’s rules will have a citation left on it inside a white envelope with “Violation” clearly marked on one end.

The images below show what the envelope and citation inside look like. (Click to enlarge)

The envelope and citation slip both provide directions for making a payment. Note that parking citation payments made online with a credit card will be charged an additional $3.50 convenience fee.

Appealing Parking Violations

Parking violations can be appealed by contacting SEPTA by letter or our citation website https://parksepta.com/ within seven days. The written appeal must include the following:

  • Citation Number & Violation Date
  • License Plate Number & State
  • Name
  • Address
  • City, State, Zip
  • Telephone Number
  • The reason why the violation is being appealed

Appeals without contact information will not be processed.

The appeal will be processed by the Parking Department and the decision will be reviewed by SEPTA management. All decisions are final. SEPTA will try to respond to all appeals within 14 days of receiving the appeal.

Drop-Off Etiquette

Many customers are dropped off at station parking lots. If you are dropping someone off, respect the needs of those who do park by following a few simple guidelines:

  • Passengers being dropped off should exit their cars promptly and not sit idling in the parking lot.
  • Do not park in vacant permit spaces or spaces designated for disabled riders.
  • Keep driveways and travel lanes clear.
  • Do not stop where your car will block walkways or access to stairwells and platforms.
  • Do not block vacant parking spaces.
  • While waiting to pick up a passenger, be prepared to move your vehicle if it is blocking another customer’s car. Vehicles in violation of these regulations will be subject to fines and/or towing.
