Extreme Winter Weather: Prepare for Schedule Changes, Detours & Suspensions

Service Advisory Snow Winter Weather

Due to the inclement weather expected in our area this weekend and into the Monday morning commute, SEPTA is encouraging riders to allow extra time for safe travel and check septa.org/alerts for the latest information.

SEPTA will notify riders of any service delays, detours or suspended routes via our website, alerts and the app when information becomes available.

Customer Service is open on Sunday from 8 am – 6 pm and opens early on January 26 at 6 am – 7 pm. All satellite offices are closed on Monday.

SEPTA crews work diligently to ensure all transportation modes remain safe for riders by making preparations for winter weather. Here is what you can expect.

Regional Rail

The Fox Chase Line mid-day shuttle busing on 1/26 has been cancelled. Train service runs all day on Monday, 1/26. Mid-day shuttle buses resume on Tuesday, 1/27.

Frozen switches and ice on overhead wires or the electrical poles on top of rail cars can delay or shut down Regional Rail service.

Maintenance crews work to keep the corridor between Center City Philadelphia and Lansdale open so SEPTA can continue to provide service on the main branch if frozen switches prevent trains from operating on other lines.

Amtrak owns the tracks on which the Wilmington/Newark, Paoli/Thorndale and Trenton lines operate. SEPTA works with Amtrak to resolve weather-related problems.

Snow Preparation and Clearing for Regional Rail

SEPTA has a program in place for weather preparations as well as clearing parking lots and platforms at SEPTA’s Regional Rail stations. If snow or ice is anticipated, team members often treat surfaces with deicing products as part of our preparations. Generally, snow removal starts when the snow stops. But with a service area covering 2,200 square miles, the exact time may vary depending on conditions.

[B] Broad Street Line & [L] Market-Frankford Line

The B and L are the best options for riders during severe winter storms. SEPTA keeps train cars ready for service by storing them overnight in tunnels and maintenance car houses. Crews are assigned to keep station entrances, platforms and sidewalks clean of ice and snow.

[T] Trolleys

The T Trolleys will be on planned diversion to 40th and Market starting 10 pm Friday, 1/23 until at least 5 am on Monday, 1/26. The Tunnel closure may be extended due to weather. The T Shuttle bus will operate during this outage period; riders should continue to use the T Bus Schedules for bus times.

Planned tunnel maintenance work scheduled for this weekend has been canceled due to snow-related safety and staffing issues and will be rescheduled. However, SEPTA’s current tunnel operations involve staff at 40th St Portal checking equipment on its way into the tunnel, and this work is unsafe to perform in the snow. Therefore, the diversion is continuing as planned.

[M] Norristown High Speed Line & [D] Trolleys

The D1/D2 bus substitution for 1/25 only has been cancelled; trolley service will run as normal on Sunday.

Bus Routes

During a winter snow or ice emergency, SEPTA will attempt to operate all bus service, although a large number of routes may be detoured and/or suspended. We try to maintain service on our most heavily used routes, which generally operate on streets that have been given a high priority for snow removal.

SEPTA Access

Access service depends on road conditions in your pick up area, as well as the location you’re traveling to. All riders should confirm their destination is open and expect delays during inclement weather events.

Passengers will be contacted via text and/or phone in the event their scheduled trip has been canceled.

During extreme weather conditions when SEPTA Access is suspended, every effort will be made to continue service for kidney dialysis and other urgent, critically-needed medical treatment.
