Free wireless Internet access is now available to SEPTA riders at Market East and Suburban stations through a partnership between the authority and Comcast’s Xfinity Wifi.
Wifi is available at these two stations for all SEPTA customers, regardless of whether they are Comcast subscribers. All you need is a laptop, smart phone or other wireless device with online capabilities, and you’re ready to surf the Web or check your email while waiting for the train.
The wifi network for the stations is accessible anywhere in the stations as well as on train platforms, and getting connected takes only seconds by following a few simple steps.
First, get your device of choice out and access the network, which is named “xfinitywifi” at both Suburban and Market East stations.
Then, open up a Web browser, which will reveal a portal page with two access options.
After that, it’s time to log-on. Comcast Xfinity customers can use their personal ID and password to get online. For non-Xfinity customers, there’s a separate link. Click on that and you’ll be directed to SEPTA-sponsored free Internet.
From there, buckle in, and enjoy blazing-fast high-speed wifi Internet as you travel down the information super-highway.
The free wifi service is being offered under a three-month pilot project. SEPTA is looking for ways to continue and expand wifi access for customers beyond this period, and possibly at additional locations.
This initiative started when Comcast asked to install wireless equipment at SEPTA’s Center City stations for its Internet customers – part of a major wifi initiative the company recently announced. Comcast agreed to SEPTA’s requirement that the service be free and accessible for all riders, and the stations were then wired up for wifi.
“This is another step in our ongoing effort to enhance the customer experience,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph M. Casey. “This partnership with Comcast gives our riders a high-quality amenity at no cost – to riders or SEPTA’s bottom line.”
