SEPTA Volunteers Help Fill Community Fridges

On Saturday, June 14, 2025 SEPTA Sustainability organized a volunteer event in partnership with Mama Tee—a local nonprofit dedicated to fighting food insecurity in Philadelphia.

SEPTA’s Sustainability Playbook aims for two (2) food accessibility events per year. Partnering with Mama Tee supports SEPTA’s goal to improve access to local food via transit.

Nine volunteers including SEPTA employees, their friends, and family came together to deliver food to 10 community fridges across the city.

A total of 120 pounds of shelf-stable food was collected at SEPTA Headquarters in the weeks leading up to the event. This was supplemented with fresh produce generously donated by local grocers—ensuring that each fridge was stocked with a variety of nutritious options for those in need.

Transit plays a vital role in food access.

SEPTA connects riders to over 2,700 SNAP grocery stores within a quarter mile of transit routes including 323 near Metro stations.

Additionally SEPTA supports 10 farmers markets located on or adjacent to its stations—helping to bring fresh, local food closer to where people live and travel.

Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and helped make this event a success. Your efforts are making a real difference in the lives of our neighbors!
