With both the Broad Street Run and Penn Relays falling on the same weekend this year, SEPTA is helping runners and spectators get a head start on two of Philadelphia’s signature sports events–the Blue Cross Broad Street Run, and the Penn Relays.
Broad Street Run
Free rides on the Broad Street Line will be provided to registered participants for the Broad Street Run, on Sunday, April 30, 2023, with Express trains operating every 10 minutes prior to the race. The express trains will depart NRG Station beginning at 4 am with stops at Walnut-Locust; City Hall; Race-Vine; Spring Garden; Girard; Erie; Olney Transportation Center; and Fern Rock Transportation Center. Local trains will run in between Express trains making stops at all Broad Street Line Stations. Free rides for registered runners are available on the BSL before and after the race. Participants must display their 2023 official race bib with their competitor number to ride for free.
Race participants can take advantage of early morning service on the Glenside Combined Regional Rail Line to Fern Rock Transportation Center and either walk to the start or transfer to the Broad Street Line. SEPTA is encouraging customers to check https://www.septa.org/systemstatus as dozens of bus routes operating on, across, and around Broad Street in parts of North Philadelphia, Center City, and South Philadelphia will be altered due to road closures and detours that will be in place for the race.
Detours are expected to start at approximately 6:15 am on Sunday. SEPTA will resume regular service as soon as possible after the race.
More information about detours and using SEPTA to get to and from the race can be found here:

Penn Relays
On Saturday, April 29, SEPTA will offer extra service on various Regional Rail Lines to accommodate
riders attending the Penn Relays. Additional trains will be operated on the West Trenton; Warminster; Media/ Wawa; and Trenton Lines. Specific schedule information for the above Regional Rail Lines can be found here: https://www.septa.org/bulletins/penn-relays-extra-saturday-service-april-29-2023/
Riders on bus routes 30, 42, and 49 should expect delays due to traffic volume during the Penn Relays.
