SEPTA today released its Request for Proposals (RFP) for the final design phase of the King of Prussia Rail (KOP Rail) Project.
This marks another major milestone for the project, which will extend the existing Norristown High Speed Line (NHSL) four miles into King of Prussia, providing a “one-seat” ride from any station along the NHSL, including 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby and Norristown Transportation Center.
“KOP Rail will connect the three largest employment hubs in the region – Center City, University City, and King of Prussia – increasing equity by increasing access to jobs and opportunities with frequent and reliable transit service,” said SEPTA General Manager and CEO Leslie S. Richards.
SEPTA previously announced that KOP Rail entered the Project Development Phase of the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grant program – a critical milestone in seeking federal funding support. The CIG program appropriates funds for light, heavy, and commuter rail projects; streetcar; and bus rapid transit projects. New Starts provides approximately $2.3 billion per year in federal funding to transit projects across the United States, including extensions to existing systems like the Norristown High Speed Line.
SEPTA included $390 million for KOP Rail in the recently released proposed Fiscal Year 2023 Capital Budget and 12-Year Program, further cementing its commitment to the project to leverage additional federal funding.
KOP Rail is a key component of SEPTA Forward, SEPTA’s Strategic Plan, which focuses on increased connectivity, access, and equity. Together with other SEPTA Forward initiatives, such as Trolley Modernization and Bus Revolution, it promotes and strengthens regional growth and connects people with opportunity.
