Ridership: October 2024

Average daily ridership for October 2024 was 797,101 unlinked passenger trips across all modes. This is the highest total ridership since the start of the pandemic – exceeding last month’s totals by 6,000 unlinked passenger trips! 

System-wide ridership increased 12% from October 2023 to October 2024. On average there were 84,633 more trips per day in October 2024 compared to October 2023. This is based on calendar month.

System-wide ridership in October 2024 was 75% of pre-COVID October 2019 ridership. October 2024 experienced the highest total ridership since the start of the pandemic and August 2024 experienced the highest recovery rate.

Bus, Regional Rail, and subway/elevated all experienced the highest total ridership since the start of the pandemic as we continue to invest in safety, security, cleaning, and service levels.

Bus Ridership continues to experience steady year over year growth. Bus ridership has increased 7% relative to October 1023. Our frequent “15 Minute Max” routes have a recovery rate of 82% – indicating that better service leads to higher ridership. In fact – sixteen (16) routes have a recovery rate that exceeds 90% including four (4) routes that have higher ridership than this time in 2019. The five (5) routes with the highest recovery rates are Route 49 (121%) Route 42 (105%), Route 54 (103%), Route 21(102%), and Route 40 (98%).

Bus ridership recovery has been more robust on the weekends. Ridership has also steadily grown throughout the day. Ridership has increased 20% on Saturdays and 16% on Sundays. Ridership during the 1PM, 2PM, 3PM, 7PM, and 8PM hours have the strongest recovery rates.

    Subway/elevated ridership is the highest since the start of the pandemic indicating that our cleaning and security efforts are paying off. Ridership has increased 20% relative to October 2023. Subway/elevated ridership is at 71% of pre-pandemic levels based on revenue ridership data.

    Trolley ridership has increased by 8% or 4,465 unlinked trips per weekday compared to October 2023. Weekend trolley ridership recovery has been stronger than weekday. Ridership has increased 11% on Saturdays and 8% on Sundays. Recovery rates are growing throughout all time periods of the day. The G (Route 15) has a recovery rate of 110%, T (Routes 10, 11, 13, 34, 36) have a
    recovery rate of 65% and D (Routes 101, 102) have a recovery rate of 70%.

    Regional Rail ridership increased by 17% compared to October 2023.
