Ridership: December 2024

Average daily ridership in December 2024 was 698,655 unlinked passenger trips across all modes which is 71% of pre-COVID December 2019 ridership. SEPTA service levels have recovered to 88%.

System-wide ridership increased 7% from December 2023 to December 2024. On average there were 46,862 more trips per day in December 2024 compared to December 2023. Most of this ridership growth is from the Broad Street Line [B] and the Market-Frankford Line [L].

It is important to note that a 7.5% fare increase was implemented on December 1, 2024.  

Broad Street Line [B] and Market-Frankford Line [L] ridership increased 19% relative to December 2023. It’s currently standing at 65% of pre-pandemic levels. 

Bus and Trolley [T] ridership growth was limited to just 1% relative to December 2023. This equates to an increase of 3,050 unlinked trips on Bus and 389 unlinked trips on Trolley.

Seventeen bus routes have a recovery rate exceeding 90% including five routes with ridership exceeding December 2019 ridership levels. The five routes with the highest recovery rates include Route 49 (119%), Route 54 (105%), Route MFO (104%), Route 40 (103%), and Route 42 (101%).

Bus ridership decreased 4% on Saturdays and increased 14% on Sundays relative to December 2023. Ridership during the 1PM, 2PM, 3PM, 7PM, and 8PM hours have the strongest recovery rates.

Trolley [T] ridership decreased 6% on Saturdays and increased 11% on Sundays. Weekend Trolley [T] ridership recovery has been stronger than weekdays.

The Route 15 [G] has a recovery rate of 91%, Trolley [T] Routes 10, 11, 13, 34, 36 have a recovery rate of 58%, and Routes 101 & 102 [D] have a recovery rate of 60%.

Regional Rail has experienced strong growth over the past year.

In December 2024 average daily ridership on Regional Rail increased 11% relative to December 2023.

Ridership typically declines in December relative to November and October due to colder weather, the holidays, and school closings.
