On Monday, August 30, SEPTA Route 101 and 102 Trolleys will return to normal service after several extensive federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) construction projects conclude. For nearly a year, SEPTA replaced regular trolley service with shuttle buses along portions of the line.
SEPTA invested $34 million in Stimulus funding to complete six infrastructure improvement projects to improve service reliability, safety, and rider comfort on the Route 101 and Route 102 Trolley lines.
During the past year:
- Over 14 miles of new power cables and 10 miles of fiber optic cable were installed
- More than 9 miles of continuously-welded rail were installed and 11,000 cross ties were replaced
- 29 highway grade crossing signal systems on Routes 101 & 102 were upgraded
- 10 highway grade crossing devices on Route 101 were replaced
- Completed 8 miles of brush cutting
- Cleaned and repainted 338 overhead wire structures
Riders will continue to see SEPTA in-house crews working on upgrades to station buildings and platform areas including the installation of new station signage and maps, through the end of 2010.
Motorists are advised not to park too close to the trolley tracks, which could result in delays to service and possible towing.
In addition, SEPTA has completed a year-long, $1.6 million federally funded construction project to revitalize the quality and accessibility of Darby Transportation Center.
The new transit hub features:
- Dedicated one way bus transitway connecting Main Street & MacDade Boulevard
- Canopy and enclosed passenger waiting shelter with radiant heating
- Asphalt and concrete paving
- Lighting and signage
- Site Landscaping
The “Darby Loop” serves as a vital transit link for riders traveling through Philadelphia, Montgomery and Delaware counties.
With the completion of this Stimulus work, Bus Routes 113, 114 and 115 will move from their temporary boarding locations to the renovated Darby Transportation Center. Stops on Main Street & MacDade Boulevard and on Main Street at the Trolley Loop will be discontinued – these buses will stop at their new designated berths inside Darby Transportation Center.
