April 18 is National Exercise Day! Did you know studies show that people who take public transportation are more active in their day-to-day lives than people who don’t?
According to The Victoria Policy Institute and the American Public Transportation Association—people who use public transportation get over three times the amount of physical activity per day of those who don’t (approximately 19 minutes rather than six minutes) by walking to stops and final destinations.
U.S. Center for Disease Control recommends that adults should average 22 minutes of
moderate physical activity every day. While less than half of American adults achieve this target most public transportation passengers do exercise the recommended amount!
And according to Active Living Research—people who ride public transportation take 30% more steps every day than people who don’t.
If you’re looking to be even more active on your commute you can always deboard a stop early to add some extra steps to your commute especially now that it’s starting to warm up. Or take a more scenic walk from where you get off to your destination.
So remember: public transportation isn’t just convenient and cost-effective—it’s healthy too!
