For the first time since 1979 PATCO trains will stop below historic Franklin Square with the reopening of the Franklin Square Station on Thursday, April 3, 2025.
The station—located at 7th & Race St—has sporadically closed and reopened since its grand opening in 1936 with the last period of passenger service between 1976 and 1979.
Now it’s back with a new transparent headhouse made of speckled smoked glass (designed to keep birds from colliding with it), a green roof to manage stormwater runoff, and an underground platform and concourses lined with original, refurbished 1930s green-and-white tiles.
The easternmost PATCO stop in Pennsylvania is expected to draw 1,500 riders daily.
The reopened station will provide additional transportation options from South Jersey to Franklin Square and adjacent neighborhoods, businesses, and Old City attractions.
Franklin Square Station is a short walk from 8th St Station on the L and B3 and Routes 47 and 47M stop there.
