South 49th Street Bridge Track Renewal Project to Impact Local Traffic, Trolley Service

Crews will work on the excavation and renewal of the existing street track on the South 49th Street bridge. The project will provide new and improved track components, creating a smoother ride for trolley passengers and vehicular traffic.

Project Location and Hours

The work will take place at on the south side of the South 49th Street bridge over Amtrak, between Grays Avenue and Woodland Avenue from September 9 to 27.

Normal construction hours are 6 am to 3 pm, the entire week. There may be days where crews work as late as 6 pm.

Impact on Trolley Riders

The Route 36 [T5] will be detoured off Elmwood Avenue using 54th Street and Woodland Avenue. Check for posted signs.

Impact on Local Traffic

Local traffic will be permitted up to the construction site. Drivers will then be directed to the detour via Woodland Avenue, 65th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard. Signs will be posted in advance.

Emergency vehicles will have uninterrupted access. Trash collection and other city utilities will continue to have access during the closures. Pedestrian access will also remain available.

Project Details

Increased continuity with steel tie construction and increased bonding will reduce vibrations for travelers. A new street surface with fresh concrete/asphalt paving and line painting will also improve riders’ comfort, as well as provide a more attractive aesthetic.
